My LA Trip: Fela tour!

I had a ball in Los Angeles joining the wonderful touring cast of Fela reprising my role as Sandra Iszadore. Who knew I'd be bringing in the 2012 New Year right there in LA. Hopefully more of sunny LA will be in my future! It was a jam packed 2 weeks. One week of rehearsals and one week of performances, interviews, meetings, and kicking it in between! One of the interviews I did was for YoungHollywood.com the interview featured, Nandi Bhebhe, Jill Vallery, and myself talking and dancing with the host, Lesley Robbins.

I'm not sure how we found the time to squeeze this in after rehearsal and before the show that night, but we made it work LOL. It was amazing and a blessing to return to the show if only for a week! I will be sure to let you all know if I roll through the "shrine" on the tour again. The Ahmanson theater was huge and the sound was great, I was digging LA! While in LA I had so many great friends and family come through including Stu James, Lesly Donald, Marcus Mitchell, Shaun Earl, Lisa Thomas, Adisa Anderson, and the lovely Sakara Anderson, along with their sons, girlfriends, and family as well! Not to mention the talented Scott Nevins and friend, who seemed to have had a ball. I also met soul singer Ndambi who attended with her manager Monica Young. Saycon and Nneka in New York City

Nneka in New York! the Nigerian & German songbird is here in the U.S. to promote her new album. I saw her across the room in a Whole foods store while have a tea with my friend Maia (aka Soulluvlai) often at a loss for words I couldn't remember her name for the life of me but of course who can forget that face! A classic beauty without a shred of makeup. Boldly, and nosily, I approached her to ask if she was a Nigerian singer she said yes though I'm pretty sure she and her friend thought I was full of sh*t, LOL anyway we began to chat. I told her about my visit to Nigeria last spring. Nneka said she was in town to promote her new album and I was happy to tell her we shared a publicist when we were in Nigeria, Miss Bobby Taylor who did some amazing work during our time there. Nneka was kind and I was random, anyway, well done Nneka let's do a duet one day :-) let's unite for Liberia and Nigeria ya digg?. Check out this video of Nneka making of her new album.

Irie Girl: Saycon Sengbloh & Katori Hall's Newest Play

This week has been a ton of fun with alot of hard work. I am missing my family dearly during this holiday season so I'm sending love to Georgia and New Jersey!Thanks to Marty Gould Cummings and Anthony Hollock I had so much fun raising money for the Ali Forney Center and had a ball singing with new band members, on the same bill with Nicholas Ryan Gant, Jahi Kearse, and Roderick Covington thanks to the help of Charles Browning the show at Nectar was a success. Special thanks to Dahgrib! An announcement has also gone out regarding my participation in Katori Hall's new play, "Hurt Village" premiering in New York in February! I'm looking forward to doing a new and challenging role and excited to work with Miss. Patricia McGregor and I can't believe the show currently boasts 3 former students of Freddie Hendricks, Tri-Citie Highschool and YEA, myself along with Godspell's Joaquina Kalukango and Amari Cheatom along with the awesome Tony Award winning Tonya Pinkins whom I just saw in Milk Like Sugar! This show touches on some serious topics including the treatment of U.S. army vets post war and the effects of regentrification on a southern project apartment complex and its raucous residents. It's definitely a character that people have not seen me do. For those of you who don't know I was born and raised in Georgia! I have Liberian roots on my dad side but I hail from College Park, GA, Old National East to be exact! Showtay! Anyway, I currently make my home in Brooklyn, NY but I keep up with artists from back home. So, I saw College Park, GA native and R&B star Monica on Wendy Williams and I was so excited to hear about her new album and reality show and as a fan of hers it was a great interview. Years ago my friend Khalid and I would sit and sing the Boy is Mine over and over again with stereo turned up, the song blasting on repeat! Anyway, Monica is still at it, making new music and has a great cause to represent. Its called Feeding America! I was inspired by her growth and her life in terms of having dealt with so many ups and down in her personal life. She is truly an extraordinary Everyday Warrior! I want to spread the word for the holiday season that Monica mentioned how you can help feed hungry children. There's so many children right here in America who don't have access to food daily. Milk Like Sugar

Milk like sugar! Milk, milk like sugar! Finally, I got out of the house and saw the show. You know how it is when you're waiting on something, waiting for time, waiting for people, waiting for money, just waiting to go see a show and somehow you forget because life sort of takes over and then you turn around and the show has closed already! Well that didn't happen to me, on a whim I called my friend Nicole and we went out to see Milk Like Sugar. Tickets were available we made it happen. I'm shown above with the the cast. If you don't know, the show written by Kirsten Greenidge, is a play about a trio of young ladies who decide to make a pact to have babies while still in highschool, the young men and friends, and mother involved in their lives . I took in this show that was deeply anxious inspired by true events and well acted by friends and cohorts. Starring the lovely Angela Lewis, Cherise Boothe and Nikiya Mathis as the three naive and scheming teenagers along with young men J. Mallory-McCree, LeRoy McClain, and the awkward friend played by Adrienne C. Moore. Milk Like Sugar is a small play that makes a big statement, its truly exciting to see all this young talent onstage and to witness the hard working cigarette smoking genius of the exquisite Tonya Pinkins as the matriarch of the piece.. On a side note my good friend and "Hair" revival cohort, Nicole Lewis and I happily found ourselves seated behind Heidi Griffiths and the ever smiling Jordan Thaler, the casting directors for the NY Public theater. They looked on us with the twinkling eyes of proud parents as the 4 of us reminisced on how casting a little 3 day 40th anniversary "Hair"concert lead to Tony award winning stint on Broadway , London and a National tour. Our memory was cut short when the lights dimmed and sound of Beyonce "Run the World Girls" theme started pumping from the speakers as the 3 highschool divas in training started us on a journey. I enjoyed the show having recently read another play by the author, and I look forward to more of her work!

[Saycon Sengbloh pictured above with Stanley Tucci] Amazing fun! I enjoyed singing at the annual Arts & Letters event for the YMCA! I was asked to perform Defying Gravity for an audience of professionals representing YMCA locations all over New York they were doing a fundraisor to help children all over the greater New York area. Actor Stanley Tucci was honored for his work that evening. Proceeds from Arts & Letters benefit the more than 13,000 New York City public school children who receive free enrichment as part of the Y AFTER SCHOOL initiative. For three hours a day, five days a week throughout the school year, girls and boys are able to participate in these activities. I'm proud to use my talents for this cause.

Fashion Week: Saycon at Mychael Knight

Things started nicely for me this week, in that I've been writing new songs, and
have great friends in town this week! Its pretty amazing, my girl Day Hill of
Buddhaflyy and her whole team included her business partner Keisha Mackie-Coleman came up from Atlanta to do the Mychael Knight show on Saturday night. The quality of his clothing is amazing, I hope to get something made by him asap! The show was
flawless and makeup was beautiful and the evening was so much fun! My friend
@CharlesBrowning met me at the soho event fresh from another show his cousin
Olivia was in. She's an up and coming model, the 3 of us have been kickin' it
since fashion week began. I won't front, I had the ultimate fan-out moment when I
realized Trina was sitting across from me on the front row! LOL everyone knows
me for singing love songs or doing theater but I'm from the dirty south and
Trina is one of my favs! Also in the house was celebrity hair stylist Terrence Davidson, VIBE editor Daytwon Thomas, and supermodel, Jessica White, who wore the finale look on the run way. Coming up I'll be attending Edwing D'angelo
and B. Micheal and I'm looking forward to it!

Motown Baby!

Hey guys just a little peak at the cast of the most recent workshop of the Motown inspired Berry Gordy musical! We spent much time tweaking the script and singing the changes! Its gonna be a good one, I found myself play several key character, important people in Mr. Gordy's life, including his beloved sister Anna Gordy,was formerly married to Marvin Gaye, the fabulous Martha Reeves, and the tough talking, smoothly powerful Edna Anderson. Many things change during the creative process but so far it has been amazing!

Its been so much fun linking with my old "Wicked" buddy Marty Thomas! As many of you know I was in Wicked for 4 years and Marty was one of the coolest people in the cast! We've stayed in touch all these years. I even recorded my initial idea for the upcoming single "Warrior" at his home studio. He's been super, always supportive and hooking me up with the most fun gigs singing at various clubs and dinners, introducing me great people. He is the host of "Marty Thomas presents Diva at Industry" a popular gay spot in midtown Manhattan. I tried his Diva Gaga shades for kicks!!! I've had a ball singing there, testing out my new singles and serving up a little Color Purple for the nostalgia, honey! Hair alumnus Anthony Hollock was there and my friend Asantewaa and I had a ball hanging out backstage and enjoying other people's voices, costumes, and antics!

Nigerian Reunion: Saycon Sengbloh & Omotola Jalade

Its been a busy few weeks we attended the annual Nigerian Reunion in Orlando, Florida. There I performed Upside Down from Grammy award nominated Original Cast Album of Fela and I also sang a new version of Sorrow, Tears, and Blood (Bamboosounds.net). My highschool friend and singer extraordinaire Clinton Harris stopped by! Between performances there was fun in the sun, crazy onstage antics, and lots of questions from the Nigerian youth about the Fela Broadway production. All I can say is see for yourself what a moving piece it is, as it continues to tour the U.S. The highlight of the evening was meeting Omotola Jalade!

Hey guys it was an "All in the Family" event that brought us out to South Paw! It was crazy, I had just had a photoshoot earlier that day with Phillis Kwentoh but we made it happen! All the Family features several groups in hip-hop, reggae, R&B, genre and I joined them for a cool night of music. Hosted by Whitney Brown, and groups Under the Rasta Influence, Cherry L,Vision, and 86 Supreme and of course me! We had Rob Gertler in the house taking photos and TJ Pelles on projection, Danny Soto giving us movement and of course the bodypainted ladies, Ayesha Baxter, from Miss Sophie!I premiered a new DJ Serge Negri track to the Brooklyn audience, and wore my favorite new glasses!

Saycon Celebrating Opus PS 118 @Saks!

Congrats to the students at Opus 118! And also to Steve and Ruth Hendel, executive producers of Fela! who were among the celebrated for the evening! While Steve was away with the Opening of Fela in Amsterdam, Ruth was there to accept the award and we grabbed a pic together! Kimberley Richardson hosted the evening and I must say the event was chalk full of New Yorks best and brightest! The other honorees were George C. Wolf, and the late Barbara Ann Tear, whose daughter accepted on her behalf. People came out to support even on this rainy, rainy evening! I was happy to be there surrounded by the gorgeous shoes in the shoe parlor at Saks, not to mention being serenaded by the wonderful kids from the program! Highlight of the evening was meeting the subject of "Umi Says", Mos Def's mom! she was lovely and kind! A special thanks to my friend Dejuan Wilson who invited me to this fabulous event!

Macdella Cooper Foundation Luncheon

There's no time like the present to make plans and I've been making big ones. One of the most exciting ventures I see coming forward will be more work with the Macdella Cooper foundation. I met Macdella Cooper a few months ago and performed in her La'Africana program a fundraiser for her school located in Liberia, West Africa. And god willing there will be more. Thanks to some really great artists who are lending their time, skill, and patience I will soon be presenting new songs, new music videos, and more live performances in the weeks and months to come. On a day that included meetings with all of them I started off at a small luncheon that featured some amzing people who intend to make change, each in his/her own way in Africa.

I was thrilled to be part of the studio audience! I can't wait to sing on BET too one day!Kimberly turned it out singing live with her band and K. Michelle debuted her new music video. The single for the video has an interesting pic, her outfit is similar to the Southern Pin-Up cover LOL I love it!!! K. Michelle and Saycon have great taste!

Saycon and Motown Reading #1!

As the summer approaches I'm excited to prepare for a return to Motown with a show that's in works about the life of Berry Gordy and Motown. I had the opportunity to participate a few months ago and met some great people. Our next reading is fast approaching!
I enjoyed some great talents at a celebration and fundraiser organized by
Rebecca Covington. I met her durng the "Motown" reading and let me tell you
she's a hardworking talent with a big heart! She recenty lost her brother, Daniel Covington, former Louisville Cardinal to
violence in Kentucky. At the show were many performers includng Eric Lajuan
Summers, Krystal Brown, Chester Gregory, and many more along with special guest
Eric Roberson who sang a song from his album and created a song based on words
suggested by the audience! It was a beautiful night for a beautiful cause! God bless Rebecca and her family!

Celebrating Darien Hicks! We miss you!

I had the honor of performing for the posthumous birthday celebration of Darien Hicks a wonderful friend, brother, son, and performer who past away last year. He would have been 30 years old and we miss him! Charles Browning was the executive producer of the event and it was a class act! Hosted by the comedienne Gena Pemberton featuring musical performances by Marc Villa, Charles Browning, and dance by Danny Soto. Darien's family were in attendance and Charles also had a lovely brunch with them the next morning. I sang songs from Southern Pin-Up (http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/southern-pin-up-special-edition/id302475798) and also covered some of Darien's favorite Janet Jackson songs.

I had the great pleasure of attending "Kimberly Nichole Presents:The Rise of the Underground" at Le Poisson Rouge.This show was featuring Kimberly Nichole, Rahbi, and Charles Perry! Woo they were on fire! Lots of good "sangin", ruffles, lace, diamonds and pearls: everything I adore! It was a great show and I had a great time! They were on fire!

Theater is alive and well! I attended the opening night for the Whipping Man starring Andre Braugher. It was a very unique show that give a bit of insite into the lives of slaves own by Jewish Americans. A different angle from the usual narrative on slavery the play also featured Jay Wilkison and Andre Holland who has an uncanny resemblance to Danny Soto. Of course I had a ball hamming it up in front of the red carpet "step and repeat"! I'm a recessionista, my shoes cost more than my entire outfit! We had fun laughing as the people told Danny congrats on the show that he happened to not be in! Great Fun!

Saturday Night Live!

So Saturday night was a blast nostalgic, timely, and fun! Hanging out with old friends enjoying the shenanigans that can only go on backstage at SNL! Maia, David, Danny, and I spent our time hanging out in Keenan's dressing room and watching the scene changes and set ups backstage. Security is already tight but with "the" Mark Zuckerberg on set it was extra tight. He's so young yet so very successful, being the creator of Facebook and all! We went inside the studio to watch Nicki Minaj's performances close up. She wore a fabulous gown for the first song: the cinderella look and a hood-colorful cat suit for part two, makeup flawless both times (shout-out Day of Buddhaflyy who introduced us to hip-hop's newest chanteuse at the end of the show! Afterwards we partied with more folks from Tri-Cities highschool. Famously the Saturday Night Live crew attends an After-Party and an After-After Party! Good Times ya'll!

This week I reconnected with my friend Day! She's known as a makeup artist, stylist, but she's also an actress and writer. We attended highschool together and were in Freddie Hendricks' YEA! As a stylist Day helped me to re-create the Vanity Six/ Apollonia Six look in my retro-music video for "Recognize"! Currently her work can best be seen all over the world as the make-up artist who gives you the ultra girly glam of hip-hop recording artist Nicki Minaj and the soft and natural look of Chili of TLC whose reality show, "What Chilli Wants" is airing on VH1. She even took time to "beat" my face for an interview I did for Liberian Seabreeze Journal I've included photos from that day! Tonight Nicki Minaj will be a guest on Saturday Night Live! It will be a great night, our other classmate Keenan Thompson has invited us to come hang! I'm looking forward to it.

The Fela! Broadway experience found me in some of the most exciting situations, one of my favorites being the Tony Awards! We were nominated for 11 Tony awards! My mentor Freddie Hendricks, and my friends David Kote and Shilla Benning all found their way to NYC for the ceremony! I received well wishes from everyone and took lots of pictures in my dress by designer Edwing D'eangelo! Both my beau, Danny and I were dressed up and had a wonderful time!

I hit the studio the other day to record a demo for songwriting team Thomson and Mann! That's Jeff Thomson and Jordan Mann along with drummer and engineer Robin Lai photographed above. They're a couple of great guys who are doing some beautiful work. We recorded a spec song for a new Disney film called 'African Cats"! I hope it gets picked up and I got my fingers crossed. Meanwhile in between talking to my Mom, spending time with my boyfriend, and catching up on sleep, Ive been writing a few songs of my own. I'm excited about the music, image, and expression that I'll bust out with in 2011. More to come!

Its been a while and I have alot of catching up to do! During the last few months so much has happened and I have yet to blog about any of it! They did a great article and pictorial on Fela! on Broadway and there's also a fun article about the new Minx nail trend that features my hands. Saycon is "Accidental" Cover girl of New York Times best seller!

So after many rumors and questions and "big foot sightings" the search is over! One of my friends has found proof that I was indeed on the cover of a book! Ha ha, apparently a stock footage shot of me modeling as a business woman a while back has wound up on the cover of the 2009 edition of Connie Bricoe's New York Time's best seller "Big Girls Don't Cry", a novel. I always wanted to be on a romance cover in a big fluffy dress, well soon come the fluffy dress, but for now check me out on the cover of Big Girls Don't Cry"! Now if only I could be like the character on the book!

Fela! Cast in the Recording Studio!

Finally, the Broadway cast of Fela! has begun recording the soundtrack to the show! After a long week of performances, we headed into the studio on our show night off to lay the vocals and live band music of the Fela!. Soon people will be able to purchase our versions of some of the most exciting songs composed by Fela Kuti! Pretty exciting, since last year I had the great opportunity to record what would end up the Grammy nominated soundtrack for the Hair revival! The Fela album is to be released in June 2010!

Dreams do come true!!!I represented the cast of Fela! during fashion week at the Manhattan Pavillion. This week was action packed with a great time of beginning rehearsals and my official modeling, cat walking, heel clicking premiere! I walked in the show presented by Elle magazine, Oral B (hence the toothbrushes in the background pics). It was curated by Caravan! I met some cool models, actresses,jewelry designers, and the Real House Wives of New Jersey! One of their children walked in the show as well. I wore a hip hugging dress by Tart. Friends Tallia Brinson, Sahr Ngaujah, and Benjamin Brown were there to support and Ben and Joshua took pics. . . Enjoy some pics from the day. . Fela! is coming to Broadway!

Hello family,

Its been quite a year! I remember when I started this blog and I had performed in Central Park at the Delacort in Hair over the summer and at the same time as Fela! was off Broadway at 37 Arts. I saw the show and enjoyed my friend Sahr Ngaujah starring in this touching and jam packed musical portrayal of Fela Anikulapo Kuti's rich life! I laughed, I cried, took pics and wrote a blog about it! Now here I am proud to announce I'll be appearing in Fela too! After many auditions and a summer of double duty with Fela! rehearsals in the daytime and Hair at night. We are getting it ready for the Eugene O'neil stage. This production stars Sahr Ngaujah, Kevin Mambo, myself, Saycon, and the fabulous Lilias White. Along with a talented ensemble of dancers and Antibalas, the Afrobeat orchestra of NYC! We are directed by the incredible Bill T. Jones. I'm so excited about this time and I'm thrilled to announce on Saycontalks that Fela! is finally coming to Broadway and I'm gonna be a part of it!!!

What a week its been! Its my Mom's birthday week and I'm wishing her a Happy Happy birthday traveling from New York to Los Angeles and back to New York in the blink of an eye! I met THE Blacksnob Miss Danielle Belton! She's an up and coming writer and very popular blogger! I found her site blacksnob. com looking for First Lady Michelle Obama's fashion pics! I've been hooked ever since. Danielle's writing is quirky and political and relates to lots of interesting topics! She blogged about an upcoming visit to New York City and I wrote to her about meeting and she wrote back. Attention people. . .here yee here yee. .. for approximately 4 minutes I danced and sang my heart out on the Late Show with David Letterman! Along with the cast of Hair we performed a combo number of "Aquarius and Let the Sun Shine In/Flesh Failures"! We rehearsed all day and hung out in the trailer and met Paul Schaffer too. It was great and my Mom and Aunty and cousins were texting me all night!

Saycon records the revival soundtrack of HAIR

After opening week we kept full speed ahead to record the soundtrack for the show!This Hair revival has kept me plenty busy! We did the whole thing on a Monday! It was crazy and took lots of concentration but since we sing this stuff every night we were able to make it happen!I think I was "peace signing" and cheesin' a lil' too hard in this pic!

But seeing Outcast's platinum plaque in the hallway made me feel I was most definitely in the right place!Legacy Recording Studios in New York City!

WOW! Its been quite a month! Opening night was beautiful and exciting I've included some pictures from the night! I chose a simple cream colored dress and put a few curls in my Hair and hopped on the shuttle for the after party! I'm shown with Sasha Allen and Cassie Levy who play Dionne and Sheila in the show. I also posed with one of Hair's producers Andy Sandburg. And there's a shot with cast mate Nicole Lewis.

Here we go! After weeks of hard work and lots of dedication Hair makes its 2009 Broadway revival official! Opening night and every night, Hair will be at the Hirschfeld theatre located at 302 W. 45th Street in New York City! This is exciting news as many fans of Saycon Sengbloh from Rent, the Color Purple, Aida, and Wicked have been asking:" what's new and where can I see Saycon perform?" Now that the show will be opened the schedule will be ripe for other concerts and live performances here in New York City. Its been a long few weeks as Hair is preparing for the Broadway! Lots of work and less sleep! The cast was invited to perform at an event last week that took place at the Gershwin theatre: My old 'Wicked' stomping grounds!It was bitter sweet but we had a great time and I spoke with Stephen Schwartz whom I hadn't seen since the Broadway Meets Country event a few years back. The cast sang "Flesh Failures/Let the Sun Shine In" It was a cool night.

President Obama: Yes We Did!

"I'm so excited and I just can't hide it!!! Obama finally took control and I think I like it!" Today was a wonderful day: the Inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama II! It was a long day full of Pomp and Circumstance and lots of Splendor and I'm sure the entire Obama family will sleep well tonight! After church, coffee with the Bush family, the Inauguration, a Luncheon, a Parade, and 10 Inaugural Balls to attend, I'm sure they are pooped. There is a long 4 years ahead of us and the country has braced itself and is enthusiastic about getting it together! My day was alot more low key, I watched the festivities on television in the morning, then went down to 125th street at the Adam Clayton Powell Building to celebrate in Harlem with the masses. Later I caught the subway down to the Martin Luther King School: Manhattan Theatre Lab., where my friend Charles Browning teaches acting there, to celebrate with his students (the children are our future by the way) followed by an impromptu toast with fellow musician, Scott Patterson of Kojomodibosun. It was a beautiful day!Yes we can! Yes we did! Yes we will!

Tuesday night I was in a showcase at Birdland in New York City featuring songs by Scott Alan. He gave me a call to fill in for Kenita Miller who had to join the tour of the Color Purple on an emergency. Over the weekend I learned my verse to "Never Never Land" and sang it along with Merle Dandridge, Nikki James, and Crystal Hall. All wonderful singers indeed! Also, funnily enough I met the West End "Fiyero" from Wicked, Liam Tamne, who sang beautifully in the showcase and is vacationing in NYC. We took a cell phone pic together.

Saycon filmed "Prince of Motorcity"

As I reviewed my pics from the summer of love (HAIR), I came across some shots taken while in Detroit. For a couple of days I left "Hair" rehearsal at the Public theatre (with permission of course) to film the pilot, "Prince of Motor city." Described online by the Futon Critic as:"A drama pilot about a Gothic family soap inspired by "Hamlet" that centers on Billy Hamilton (Warren Christie), a young Harvard philosophy professor forced to return to Detroit to take over the family's auto company after his father's death." It starred Daniel Zacapa, Aidan Quinn and Rutger Hauer, "Friday Night Lights'" Benny Ciaramello. My scenes were with Benny (pictured above), the DP (director of photography) John S. Bartley sat with me during lunch for a chat, he actually worked on a New Zealand or Australian production of Hair ages ago! In "Prince of Motor city" I played "Roz", a fun and flirty girl who works in the Hamilton Motor's factory.
The show was cool because they took real cars and tricked them out to perfection to create a realistic new brand of car from the show's car brand "Hamilton Motors". I wish ABC would pick it up already! But there will certainly be more shows in the future!

Happy New Year to all! It is 2009 and May it be Happy, Healthy, and Wise! Whether you brought the year in celebrating loudly in the streets or cozy on the couch watching Dick Clark I hope your celebration was good and that your year will be even better! I had a wonderful holiday trip to my hometown, Atlanta, GA. I was able to see my family and party with old friends and it was great for my heart! I've got to get home more often! I'm quite sentimental and am speechless to how gorgeous my mom, nephew and nieces are!

Hello,
I'm happy to announce that I filmed an episode of Law & Order. I was told that my episode would air on December 3rd--by an official letter from the creators of the show-- but I got several calls and texts saying people saw it already!!? Go figure? Sometimes they do holiday repeats and maybe you'll catch mine on Dec. 3rd as I was told. . . I played "Nurse Pelzer" and had scenes with the two new detectives played by Jeremy Sisto and Anthony Anderson. Its a cute little scene with the detectives and my sleeping patient (in the picture above awake!) and I felt just like my Mom--Deborah, who happens to be a nurse in real life! There is certainly more to come!

First Black Elphaba. . . 44th President

I've been floating on a cloud this week as I saw my country the United States of America show up in record numbers to vote for our President-Elect Barrack Obama! This FIRST, is one that astounds a nation which at one time supported slavery and Jim Crow. So many people of our nation were so emotional for so many reasons and we are reminded of so many FIRSTS that have happened in American popular culture: in music, sports, literature, science, architecture, and visual art. African-American FIRSTS in entertainment have been particularly inspiring to me: Halle Berry winning the Academy Award for Best Actress, Outcast as the first Hip-Hop group to win Record of the Year at the Grammy's, Phylicia Rashad's Best Actress in a Play Tony win, and my own personal first as the first black woman to perform Elphaba on Broadway: Saycon Sengbloh!

There have been dynamic FIRSTS in politics that continue to occur each year but this time was different. The office of the President of the United States of America, the identity of the First Family, seemed different! Because with so many negative representations of people of color presented, with advertisements that rarely use children of color or women of color as the American example somehow--outside of politics--this election has made many people who have doubted themselves feel "good enough", feel "welcome", feel "Yes We Can" be fully American. Yes, 42 years after the civil rights movement we are still in need of encouragement, boy has slavery done a dosey on our collective self esteem! Obama's movement has made many people in this country feel:"Yes We Can" begin to get beyond the difficult parts of our history and let people know that we can look at people for who they are. And love them and respect them beyond the color of their skin!

I have gotten so many letters from girls and boys who were so excited and proud to see a Black woman performing one of their favorite characters, "Elphaba", in the musical Wicked. I was in Wicked for nearly 2 and a half years and I learned so much during that time.. .it wasn't always easy and I was so busy in my own experience of working at the Gershwin theatre that I didn't truly imagine so many kids would be inspired. Oh, but the letters flew in, the artwork the fan sites, all the love that said "We're so proud of you!" and "We can do it too!" I found out over the years that these things have meant alot to young people of color. Barack and Michelle Obama have inspired us all and I hope to inspire in the way that they have! God bless America!

Halloween was fun but voting will be even better!
Hello people after 3 weeks away, I'm getting back into the mix of writing this blog, "Saycon Talks". Oh so much has happened between now and the last time I wrote. I hope everyone had a great time on Halloween, I celebrated several times. First at a charity event at B.B. Kings NY I dressed as a little devil, I even met Captain Crunch and Chewbacca from Star Wars. The next day I met with my friend Maia to to take her kids trick or treating, I'm away from my nieces and nephews and so it was fun to do that with her, this time I had a more tame leopard ears and tail! Later I met my good friend Justin for a party for some "Gossip Girl" stars. After seeing him as "Angel" in the Broadway cast of Rent Justin had a full beard and military garb dressed as revolutionary Che Guevara! At this event party goers went all out! My favorites were "Brad & Angelina" complete with babies attached to their suit and dress lapels. And I also loved "Elliot" dressed in a red hooded sweatshirt who came to the party on a bike with E.T. and Reeses Pieces in a basket attached at the front! So Authentic!!!!

I got up the next morning to join friend and poet/writer Aquaila S. Barnes and do my part to help the Obama campaign to victory in Pennsylvania! We got a rental car and with a bag of chips and Mapquest directions on hand, we set out on our journey! Like many people I didn't know that my voice would count but I found that the people of Southwest Philly were happy to have the encouragement of individuals like our selves knocking on their doors. "Southwest Philly for Obama" was so organized, and full of vigor, I can't help but think back to the days of the civil rights movement and the level of organization it takes to reach people and get them involved.
The feeling at the grassroots level was amazing, a video of Michelle Obama streamed over the loudspeaker and lots of information was available to help. We walked on foot as we canvassed the neighhborhood making sure no voter would be disenfranchised, providing information about rides and locations to their polling location and instructions for the voting machines in the booth. I'll never forget meeting a super skeptical man and a newly registerd young man living right next to each other--talking with them was really deep! I look forward to Tuesday November 4th, the day that I get to cast my vote!!! Go OBAMA!!!

Aventures in New York: Fela the musical!

Hello Friends,

This past weekend I found myself nursing a cold when a call from an old friend came. The opportunity was here: I had the wonderful chance to see Fela the musical! Well, I tell ya I washed my face got dressed and headed down to 37 ARTs. The thing is, not only is this the story of one of my favorite musicians but my friend and *YEA brother Sahr Ngaujah was its star! This show was inspiring and brought tears to my eyes and rhythm to my gut. He did a wonderful job and all his years of creativity and world travel certainly informed his instincts as an actor. Its always good to see friends from back home. I saw not only Sahr but his beautiful wife, Ayesha, as well, they were a site for sore eyes! If you love Afrobeat you'll love this show. It closed on Sunday but hopefully a tour or Broadway production will be in its future! Special thanks to J.Kyle Manzay for tix!

Hello World I'm Saycon Sengbloh and this is my very first entry on "Saycon Talks" . . . I'm a resident of blogland now and it feels so good!

Its a typical day in New York City and I'm missing the "A" so I had to pop in the 2006 DVD "ATL" starring Tip 'T.I.' Harris to get a little taste of home. This fun flick has it all: nick names like "New-New", rollerskatin', and Waffle House give me that feeling!!! Ya'll know what I'm talking 'bout! It's a special thing to be from College Park, Georgia, and I'm proud to represent. Antwon "Big Boi" Patton of Outcast makes a wonderful turn as the neighborhood villain in this feature film produced by Dallas Austin and Will Smith. Featuring "Skate Choreography" by music producer and family friend Vaughn Newton. The film takes me way back! My neighborhood skating ring was called "Skate Town" and for those of you who don't know, skating rinks present a lifestyle that's both family friendly and flirty too with lot's of good music. Even the elementary school would give us coupons to get in on Wednesday nights. Yes, yes, ya'll, the kiddies got to skate too! We spent many a night chasing boys and trying to be cool in the skating ring. Oh how I miss the good old days. For those of you who know me as an actress, singer, entertainer this blog will be a place to learn more about the happenings in my life and goings on in my mind!!! I'll discuss everything from music, theatre, film, and fashion, to politics, love, and culture. I call this blog a "Flashback Ya Dig" because those skates were hot!!! 'ATL' director Chris Robinson did a great job. Friends and fans hold tight we're getting pics and video and stuff on here and you'll soon have access to it all and links to my latest ventures.
